Episode 130 Dr. Kevin Pugh on Transformative Experiences in Education

Ep130 Dr. Kevin Pugh on Transformative Experiences in Education

Dr. Kevin Pugh joins Tony to talk about Transformative Experiences in education. Dr. Pugh, a high school friend of Tony’s, is one of the pioneers in the field of Transformative Experience Theory, which is a belief that “life is about having rich experiences and the things we learn in school should enrich and expand our everyday experience outside of school.” The Transformative Experience Theory focuses on how in-school learning can enrich out-of-school experience by expanding perception, contributing meaning and value to future experiences, and  how learning should be transforming our relationship with the world. It combines ideas from John Dewey’s theory of aesthetics and his philosophy of education. Transformative experiences occur when students take ideas outside the classroom and use them to see and experience the world in exciting new ways. Dr. Pugh is a professor in the School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Northern Colorado. Kevin’s book Computers, Cockroaches, and Ecosystems: Understanding Learning Through Metaphor, can be purchased here https://amzn.to/2qYEkbp Kevin’s blog can be found at https://learningandexperienceblog.wordpress.com
